The Golden Rules of Beauty

Happy (almost) New Year!!

I hope this holiday season has been amazing for you! Thanks so much for continuing to read my blog!

With 2019 literally hours away, I think this is a perfect time to not only reflect, but also think about the future. And this blog being what it is, I’ll be approaching this from a fashion/beauty standpoint.

So here they are! Five Golden Rules of Beauty for you to embrace in the new year:

  1. Beauty is…

…Not a competition.

Be proud of your fellow humans when they have great style. Be happy when someone else is happy. Another person’s beauty doesn’t take away from your own. We’re all different, but everyone is on the same journey. Everyone is just trying to live before they die.

Women should stick together more. That’s how we’ll reign. As queens. Together.

2. Beauty is…

In case you can’t read the caption: “Each one of these women is an Olympic athlete. Let’s challenge the notion that thinness is the only indicator of health and fitness.”

Not a certain waistline. Not a certain breast size. A beautiful body is a HEALTHY body.

The stats of the women in the picture above are quite blurry, so here they are, starting from left to right:

Cheryl Haworth, Weightlifting, 297 lbs

Svetlana Kharkina, Gymnastics, 105 lbs

Stacey Bowers, Triple Jump, 130 lbs

Deena Dressin, Long-Distance Running, 105 lbs

Jennifer Parlita, Trampoline, 120 lbs

Katie Smith, Basketball, 173 lbs

All Olympic athletes. There’s something you can reflect on.

3. Beauty is…

…Something that flows from the inside out.

Kindness will add more shine than any highlighter ever will. Be someone who helps. Someone who nurtures. It doesn’t mean you’re weak. It doesn’t mean you can’t be a badass. You could be an angel to someone who’s in need, no matter who you are, or what you look like.

…Not just a pretty face.

Educate yourself beyond what you “had to” learn in school. Cultivate interests, passions, skills. Read. Keep your wit sharp. Teach yourself to discern between facts and hype. Cleverness will always be more intriguing than perfect hair and makeup. To my mind, intelligence is what gives a person the most power. And what makes a person attractive.

Your brain is your greatest tool. Make the most of it.

5. Beauty is…

Hi there.

…Uniquely you.

Ultimately, beauty blogs and makeup tutorials will only take you so far. They can be so useful if their tips are relevant to your own style, but there’s just no better way to figure out what beauty means to you than to spend the time in the mirror. Try different things. Discover what you like and don’t like. Find what fuels your confidence. When you feel cute, you know you’re on the right track.

Everyone has a different face. Different tastes. Different comfort zones. Take the journey and find out what suits you. The new year is a great place to start.
